The neon sign is recognizable to generations of passersby. The bar is warm and comfortable. The burgers, tots, and shrimp cocktail come highly recommended. DAB is the beer most associated with Meier's Tavern, but an Old Style in a large frosty mug can be irresistible. Locals depend on Meier's Tavern as a gathering spot for friends and family. Legend has it a certain family of comedic former caddies call the tavern home on many a cold night.
On my recent visit, a church choir was practicing for an upcoming winter concert. They sat around one of the clothed tables in back, singing "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" in harmony. They invited me to join the choir, an offer that stood even after they heard me sing an off-key stanza. The welcoming atmosphere is perpetuated by staff and patrons alike. Worth a visit anytime of year.
